A Preview of 2017 Year of the Rooster

For more than a decade we have written a preview for the coming year and posted it for free on our website and each year more and more people eagerly await our annual preview. Read on for our take on what to expect for 2017!

On January 28, 2017 we will celebrate the Lunar New Year, but in Chinese Metaphysics we will usher in Ding You 丁酉 year on February 3, 2017 at 11:34 PM. Ding You 丁酉 year is the year of the Fire Rooster.

This will be a year of fighting. Opposing sides will pick at one another leading to a tumultuous year. Each side will focus on how the other is different creating a greater divide this year.

This year is Shi He (Shih Ho) hexagram, which symbolizes “biting through”. It is favorable to let justice be administered. That is, that which is wrong should be imprisoned or destroyed so we can move forward and up. Shi He hexagram is Li trigram over Chen trigram, thunder and fire, so we should expect a loud and hot year. There will be more loud disagreements, both on a personal level and on the world front. Politically, governments will come in with a firm hand and may not always have consideration for human rights.

A big trend this year will have to do with how we pay for goods and services. Expect non-traditional payment methods, like Apple Pay and Google Pay, to become increasingly mainstream this year. Bitcoin will also becoming more common this year. We will likely see Bitcoin have a record breaking year. Another big topic this year will be artificial intelligence. We will see massive strides in this field in 2017.

Economically, we expect the stock market to have a good year. Sectors that will have the best years will be technology, especially companies that are involved in social media or enhancing social experiences, oil & gas, finance & financial services, and mining. We will also see companies that do things differently than the standard quo gain momentum and buzz. Companies like Tesla, that are ground-breaking and tap into popular support from the public, will be very strong this year. As such, we will see more and more crowd-funding of new and innovative products this year.

On the world stage, the economies in Europe and Asia will be the strongest. African economies will struggle this year. The American government will likely create rift between themselves and their foreign partners which could lead to those allies turning to China and strengthening their economy instead.

We expect political unrest in Africa and possibly South America this year. This year will also be a tough year for typhoons in Asia. Climate change will take a serious toll on Antarctica. In the USA, we will see heightened emotions this year. In the Middle East, we hope to see things quiet down.
